Alpe d’Huez is one of the most famous ski resorts in the central western French Alps – high up, bathed in sun all year round with something for everyone. There are so many events going on during the ski season that you’ll be hard pushed to visit when something sporting or cultural isn’t going on.

It also has one of the best motorhome ski aires in France – almost completely flat, with uninterrupted views of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and is almost ski to the door.

The journey to Alpe d’Huez Aire

Alpe d’Huez is probably most famous for the #21bends that lead you up to resort – one of the most gruelling stages of the Tour De France – but it’s not at all as frightening as you’d think from watching the camera bikes!

Here’s how you get to the Alpe d’Huez aire (worth noting it is very well sign posted from the edge of the resort):

From Bourg d’Oison, take the only road up to the resort – the roads are not too narrow and accessible to protty much any motorhome

  • You’ll pass Huez Village approximately 2/3rd of the way up when you may see the weird lift that connects the village with the resort
  • Just before you enter the resort, take a right hand turn – this will enable you to avoid driving through town – sign posted Les Bergers
  • Follow this road, skirting around the resort until you reach a fork to your right
  • Take the fork and continue past Hotel Pic Blanc on your right hand side and a large car park on your left (might be out of view with snow walls)
  • When you are faced with an under ground car park imediately in front of you, turn right, contnuing down what looks to be a dead end
  • Keep right and you’ll approach the barrier for the aire

TIP: If you want to know how to work the barrier system – watch the video below – it’ll save you getting stuck as we (and countless others) did!

James’s Tour of the Alpe d’Huez Aire

  • All the pitches are almost flat and you can get away without levelling
  • Water and waste disposal just after the main entrance (hang left)
  • 100 metres from the ski area (with ski pass desk) – barely a walk
  • Les Bergers area has all the main stuff you need – a supermarket and lots of little bars and restaurants
  • WC is on site and very clean – men and women in the same block
  • Really nice location – short walk from everything with cracking views
  • OK wifi if you have a Motorhome Wifi iBoost – €20/week from Perrie & Vacances opposite but you won’t get it if you don’t have a booster
  • Huge aire so not likely to be full at any point
  • Really cheap at €11/night
  • Super sunny spot if you have solar

  • No hook up for those not off grid
  • Annoying bar that seems to crank up the volume at 3am – only an issue if you park near the entrance
  • Chair lift passes over for those who like a lie in!
  • Airport run way and helipad very close for those who like a lie in!
  • It’s a good 15 minute walk from the main Alpe d’Huez resort centre and facilities
