The aire at Le Grand Bornand is perfect for a lot of reasons – not least of all that it’s an amazing place to practice being ‘off grid’… because there’s a cushy campsite a hundred yards down the road that you can retreat to if you decide it’s not for you!

The journey to Le Grand Bornand Aire

journey to Le Grand Bornand AireJust 7.5 hours from Calais with tolls (11.5 hours the scenic/cheaper route), Le Grand Bornand is mega. it’s so easy to get to you’ll kind of think you’ve cheated when you arrive.

Approach to to Le Grand Bornand

It’s not really an approach – one minute you’re at Calais (or wherever you enter France from) stocking up on wine and canned Tartiflette and the next minute you’re there. As if by magic.

  • Compare the picture below with the summer images and Le Grand Bornand is one of the most unrecognisable aires and we’re not entirely sure why – possibly because our last visit was a night arrival but it’s immediately on the left after the bridge
  • You need everything before you arrive – fill up with water, gas, food and drink as whilst there’s everything you need available locally, you might prefer to make sure you arrive prepared as
  • This is a great aire for those of you with big-rigs – lots of space

Pros:

  • Extremely easy access for all types of motorhome and campervan
  • One of the shortest schleps from Calais to the Alps
  • Very smart public WC 100 metres away
  • Free ski bus up and down the valley and to the main Télécabines in town (also short walk) immediately outside
  • Fantastic new tourist office in the middle of town – extremely helpful and excellent resources – also has a fancy toilet!
  • Best cheese in all of France!
  • FREE!

Cons:

  • No services so come equipped
  • Limited spaces but alternatives at campsite or the aire at Chinaillon (15 minutes drive)
  • Unserviced so you might need your grain shovel for a spot of digging out!
  • 48 hour stay restriction but not enforced – simply exercise good aire-manners if there are people waiting and move on
